These 12 Minuets with Trios were originally written for orchestra. The wind instrument scoring varied considerably from minuet to minuet but the strings never included any violas. The 12 pieces would most likely have been played at a grand ball for dancing. Here they are arranged for woodwind quintet and can be played by instrumentalists of intermediate standard and above.

This arrangement for wind quintet is suitable for advanced players and is published now to mark the hundredth anniversary of Debussy's death. The arrangement was made from the piano original not any of the orchestral arrangement made by Debussy and others. A performance of all 4 movements (En bateau, Cortège, Menuet & Ballet) takes about 12 minutes. I hope that I have made this an enjoyable piece for all five players to play whether just for enjoyment or as a concert piece. (The clarinet part is for A clarinet.)

Haydn wrote the original version of this Divertimento for string quartet in about 1765. There are 5 movements. Presto. Menuet & Trio, Adagio, Menuet II & Finale, Presto. Players of good intermediate standard should enjoy playing this piece.

PPS307 W.A. MOZART: DIVERTIMENTO IN D MAJOR K.131 arranged for wind quintet by Pat Spence*

The Divertimento, originally for an orchestra (flute, oboe, bassoon, 4 horns and strings) was completed in June 1772 in Salzburg.There are six movements, Allegro, a substantial sonata form piece; Adagio, a sophisticated piece written for strings only; a gem of a Menuetto with three trios; Allegretto; a Menuetto with 2 trios and a final Adagio - Allegro molto - Allegro assai forms the grand finale. The scale and sophistication of this piece is far beyond that of the early symphonies which Mozart composed around the same time.

The arrangement is suitable for advanced and advanced intermediate players

PPS289 TELEMANN: OVERTURE À 5 IN F MAJOR arranged for wind quintet by Pat Spence

This six movement suite was composed between 1700 and 1750 - most likely near to the beginning of the 18th century when Telemann was using older style titles for the 6 movements - Overture, Chasse, Menuet, La Toye, Sarabande and Loure. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics, instead relying on contrasting pairs of players and the full ensemble. Advanced intermediate players will enjoy the well contrasted, mostly lively movements.

J.C. BACH (1735 - 82) SIX QUINTETTOS OPUS 11 for flute, oboe, 2 clarinets & bassoon edited & arranged by Pat Spence

Almost certainly composed for performance at the famous Bach - Abel concerts in London about 1771, these quintettos (originally for flute, oboe, violin, viola & cello) are a joy to play. Nos. 2 & 5 are scored for clarinets in A, nos. 1,3, 4 & 6 are for clarinets in Bb. From these and other of Bach’s works it is easy to understand why he was so strong an influence on the young Mozart - who held his friend in great esteem.

Bach introduced the clarinet to the London music scene in 1761 but was very sparing in its use, probably due to a lack of competent players.
