FAST TRACKING SERIES by MARY GOODMAN
A new concept in upper string teaching. Mary’s method harnesses the initial enthusiasm of the beginner, using short intense bursts of concentration on one aspect of technique at a time. The analogy of practice with sports training emphasises the little and often approach and enables the basic techniques, plucking, bowing and left hand position to be learned from the outset. Thus a variety of recognisable tunes can be played from a very early stage bringing encouragement, not groans, from the family during home practice.
Mary discovered that, whatever the ability of the beginner, the earlier any skill is learned the more successfully it is absorbed into the technique. She has used this method equally successfully with classes and individual pupils of all ability levels from the very brightest to those with special needs. The momentum hardly flags carried by the pupils’ enthusiasm. Success breeds success. This method is for anyone who wants to get on with the business of playing their instrument and also for those who wish to brush up on aspects of their technique.
We were extremely sorry to learn of Mary’s death after a short illness on July 16th 2015.
Mary’s daughter, Wendy Waldock, a professional cellist, discovered Mary’s bowing exercises and adapted them for cello for her own use and was so impressed with the improvement in her own technique that the result was FAST TRACK BOWINGS FOR CELLO and FAST TRACK BOWINGS FOR DOUBLE BASS.
A DVD was made while Mary (then in her 80s) was still teaching. (89 minutes).
It shows the very first lessons of a 5 year old girl and a 50 year old man and shows their progress through their first year of individual lessons. An 8 year old girl after 14 months tackles some more advanced techniques and has her first lesson on a quarter size viola. Unfortunately this is no longer available.
